Not content with working in Cubicles, Sleeping in cubicles, and eating in Cubicles, the Japanese are apparently getting their entertainment in them too. I came across a reference to “Manga Cafes,” and wondered what they were, only to discover that A manga café or a manga kissa is a kind of cafe in Japan where people can read manga cartoon comics. IN CUBICLES. People pay for the time they stay in the café. Most manga cafés also offer internet access like internet cafés and vice versa, making the two terms mostly interchangeable in Japan. For an hour stay, the cost is generally about 400 yen, with most places requiring customers to pay this as a minimum even if leaving earlier. Some manga cafés offer a service where one can rest for the night and even have a shower if need be. Diane has some interesting information about not just the cafes, but all things iconic here.

Apparently, Manga Cafes are making appearances all over the world springing up in London, Paris and Singapore.

In any given office, the chances are that there is stiff competition for a cubicle with a window. It doesn’t take an expert mathematician to work out that most of the cubicles are NOT going to have a cherished window. So after all the office infighting is over, and you manage to persuade your boss to give you that “cube with a view,” there’s a good chance you’ll be looking out over an industrial landscape of directly into another office across the way. Here is a nice view, albeit more offices.

But what if you can make your own view? Or but it? Yes, that’s right, you can buy your own view. Sound s too good to be true? Well, it is, but my friend Kate, over at The Cube Farm Survivors will sell you the next best thing. I didn’t realize it, but Kate has some great “View” for sale up at CafePress. This is one of the, a view out of a kitchen window. So if you are sick to death of looking at a grey partition, take a wander over there. It sounds like a damn good idea to me, and Kate has loads of “Views” to choose from.

Cubicle culture is no different than any other culture. At some point, a line is drawn and the group says, “Do not step over this line.” There will always be people who step over the line and this article is dedicated to those willing to push the boundaries of decent behaviour in a cubicle. Of course, there’s a fine line between decorations and junk. You decide which is which.

I love this gadget. As the manufacturers claim, at last, “there is a civilized way for visitors to announce their arrival at your cubicle entrance.” A Velcro-attached cubicle doorbell. What a great idea. If anyone has tried it, I would love to hear what you think of it.

It makes a nice change from people barging in unannounced, although I have a feeling no one will ever remember to change the batteries, so it’s likely got a limited lifespan. At least there are batteries included. You can buy them direct from cubicaller.com

Workers forced to live in Cubicles!

Workers around the world are being forced, not just to work in cubicles, but live in them too. Here are a couple of examples of workers houses. Due to increasing pressure of possible lawsuits, I am unable to name the companies concerned. Herman Miller have already threatened me with action, and I just can’t take the chance at the moment. But, seeing is believing and here is photographic proof that the problem exists.

It’s only a matter of time before American and British workers are subjected to the same indignities. IBM, for one, are considering a proposal to move ALL their operations to an undisclosed country where, “The workforce is not so damned obstinate, and doesn’t have a problem with doing as they’re told,” said a spokesperson for IBM (who refused to be named) in an exclusive interview with this reporter. Apparently, Toyota have already begun plans for the construction of 500,000 cubicle homes in preparation for the move. Who knew Toyota made houses? You have been warned.

I received an email recently from Herman Miller, the office furniture company, regarding the posts I made about their new cubicle design, the “My Studio Environments” which I wrote about here.

They apparently took exception to my comments, and also to the joke I made about their design, here.

This is an excerpt from the email:

“Dear Mr YouCube,

It has come to our attention that you have been making fun of our new cubicle design, the My Office Environments. Our designers poured their hearts and souls into this design, and are extremely upset that you said these nasty things about it. One of them even had to take a day off to recover. He was that upset. This has adversely affected our production to such a degree that we must ask you to retract your statements or risk suffering the consequences.

Please retract all your nasty comments or we will send the boys round forthwith. And let me tell you, Mr YouCube, we have lots and lots of money, and can afford the biggest, toughest boys in the furniture design world. These boys make Frank Lloyd Wright look like a little girl. So unless you want your office re-arranged, you better get right on it.”

Tiki cubicles

Here are a few examples of tikified cubicle spaces. I think this one at the top is my favorite.

The Tiki bar is definitely open. I’ll have whatever she’s having.

Cubicle pets

I feel sure that there are very few offices that will allow people to bring their pets to work. This is one of the exceptions. And not just any pet either. Not content with bringing a parrot to work, this one seems to be wearing a waistcoat.

Still, if you are not in a position to bring a real one to work, these are the next best thing.

Not quite the same as a real parrot, but probably safer. If anyone has more pictures of their cubicle pets, I’d love to see them. Stuffed or otherwise.

Crazy Cubicle Toys and things to occupy your brain in a cubicle

Several people have sent in some of their favorite cubicle toys and hobbies. Here we have some cutely painted toenails and a rather scary looking Hulk. Don’t you have anything better to do Maria? Pretty toenails though. How many toys do you have in your cubicle exactly?
